The Art of Gratefulness

A Meditative Arts Retreat at Rolling Ridge

with Patricia Campbell Carlson,
Margaret Wakeley,
and Lindsay McLaughlin

Friday April 11 - Sunday April 13, 2008

"I have been in Sorrow’s kitchen
and licked out all the pots.
Then I have stood on the peaky mountain
wrapped in rainbows,
with a harp and a sword in my hands."
— Zora Neale Hurston

What does it mean to be grateful through the ups and downs of life? How can we appreciate the gift of each day without minimizing the challenges that face us personally and as a global community? Through the mediums of music, movement, poetry, conversation, and collage we will explore how we even come to ask such questions. In the delicate beauty of the awakening springtime forest and the sacred embrace of encircling hills and streams we will ponder how gratefulness applies to our losses, to our everyday lives, and to our relationships.

Participants are welcome to arrive at the Retreat House between 5 and 7 pm on Friday night. Dinner will be served at 7 pm. The retreat will end with lunch on Sunday. Cost for the weekend is $100.

Please send a $25 deposit to reserve your space. Checks should be made payable to Rolling Ridge Study Retreat Community (RRSRC) and mailed to Lindsay McLaughlin, 120 Jubilee Lane, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425. Meals will be healthful and vegetarian. Please let us know if you have any special dietary or other needs. For more information call or email Lindsay McLaughlin at 304-724-1069, lmclaughlin@rollingridge.net.

Workshop leaders:

Patricia Campbell Carlson serves as Executive Director of A Network for Grateful Living (ANG*L), a nonprofit dedicated to gratefulness as the core inspiration for personal change, international cooperation, and sustainable activism in areas of universal concern. She works closely with ANG*L’s founder Br. David Steindl-Rast, a pioneer in the interfaith movement, and greatly values the time she spent in the 1980s as part of Sojourners community in Washington, DC.
Margaret Wakeley wears many hats at ANG*L: administrator, designer, researcher, and first contact for visitors. She has worked extensively as a vocalist across the U.S. and Europe. Now, sticking closer to home, she gets great satisfaction tailoring her repertoire for cabaret benefits for local organizations, where she serves in many volunteer capacities, including Hospicare, the Community School of Music and Arts, and the Unitarian Church in Ithaca, NY.
Lindsay McLaughlin lives and works at Rolling Ridge Study Retreat Community and is the arts coordinator for an alternative school for students with emotional disabilities in Silver Spring, MD. She dances professionally with Carla Perlo at Dance Place in Washington, DC and with St. Martin's Liturgical Dance Ministry. She is a writer, editor and mother of three grown sons.

Rolling Ridge Study Retreat Community – "Nurturing Persons and Communities" – is an ecumenical Christian retreat center on 1400 acres of forested land between the Blue Ridge and the Shenandoah River, near Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.

Cultivating a Listening Heart

A Silent Retreat At Rolling Ridge
February 8-10, 2008

"It is only in identifying with Christ,
it is only by plunging into the
great silence of God within myself,
that I can love and identify with others."

— Catherine de Hueck Doherty

In the heart of winter’s stillness and at the start of the Lenten season, here is an opportunity to set time apart and come away for awhile to enter into the great silence of God – and seek to become more merciful and loving. Guided by simple spiritual meditations and creative exercises as well as the companioning presence of each other in the silence, we will seek to deepen our ability and willingness to listen truly to the Heart of our hearts.

We will come together Friday night for dinner, an introduction to the theme, and guidance into the Great Silence. Saturday will provide spaciousness in which to rest, reflect, and listen to the Holy – while walking the mountain's wilderness trails, sitting in front of the Retreat House hearth, journaling in your room, praying in the meditation shelter, or playing in the art cottage. We will come out of the silence together Sunday morning around a simple worship service and listening circle.

Participation is limited to a small number, so register soon. The total cost, which includes two nights lodging and six meals, is $100. Contact Trish Stefanik by phone: 304-724-1069 or email: tstefanik@aol.com to reserve a space. Send a $25 deposit (or the entire fee) to RRSRC, c/o Trish Stefanik, 120 Jubilee Lane, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425. See www.rollingridge.net for more information and directions. Please include your contact information, including phone and email, and any dietary or other special needs.

Participants are welcome to arrive at the Retreat House between 5 and 7 p.m. on Friday night. Dinner will be served at 7:00 p.m. The retreat will conclude with lunch on Sunday with departure by 2:00 p.m.

Waiting in Darkness,
Carrying the Light:
Transition, Loss, Grief and Healing

An Advent Spirituality Retreat
at Rolling Ridge
With Janelle Rhorer and Jackie Sabath
Friday November 30 -
Sunday December 2, 2007

Truly it is in darkness that one
finds the Light.
So when we are in sorrow,
then the Light is nearest to all of us.
— Meister Eckhart
Someone I loved once gave me
a box full of darkness.
It took me years to understand
that this, too, was a gift.
— Mary Oliver

As the season of darkness expands, the Light shines even brighter. If you are searching in darkness for the Light, struggling with a transition or loss of any kind, join us for an Advent weekend to be still, to listen, to engage your story, to hold both joy and sorrow in the Light of compassion and communion. In the sacred space of near-winter forest we will work with the transformative process of grief — the mystery of holding fast and letting go — through story, silence, readings, music, art and the beauty of the natural world. And perhaps we will glean insight about the gift in that box full of darkness.

Participants are welcome to arrive at the Retreat House between 5 and 7 pm on Friday night. Dinner will be served at 7 pm. The retreat will end with lunch on Sunday. Cost for the weekend is $100. Scholarships are available. Please send a $25 deposit to reserve your space. Checks should be made payable to Rolling Ridge Study Retreat Community (RRSRC) and mailed to Jackie Sabath, 129 Jubilee Lane, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425. Please let us know if you have any special dietary or other needs. For more information call or email Jackie Sabath at 304-261-2653, jsabath@rollingridge.net.

Janelle Rhorer is a Pastoral Counselor in-training at Loyola College and has been coming to retreats at Rolling Ridge for several years.

Jackie Sabath lives and works at Rolling Ridge Study Retreat Community and as a licensed Pastoral Counselor in WV and MD.
